Anatomical Study on the Pial Artery of Cerebral Cortex

Abstract
Using 154 Korean Cadavers (male 71, female 79) the author has made a study on the incidence and pattern of ramification of the cerebral pial arteries, the calibers of some of them, and the angles of some between them.
The results are as follows:
1. The cerebral cortical arteries are wrapped up in the pia mater. When the pia mater is peeled off from the cerebral cortex of cadavers, the cortical arteries are stripped off with it. So it is reasonable that we call the cortical arteries "the pial arteries" clinically.
2. Supplying pattern of the cortical arteries is not related with sulci and gyri of the brain and just following development of brain tissue the arteries are developed on the cortex respectively. Usually the branches of them run along the sulci, but some cross the gyri transversely or obliquely.
3. The incidence and pattern of ramification of the cortical arteries between the right and the left side are not always symmetric. There are a lot of difference between the right and the left.
4. Each named branch of the three cerebral arteries is classified into the ordinary pattern and some variations of ramification statistically.
5. Because of covering wide field anatomical classification of each anterior, middle and posterior cerebral artery is too difficult, so only branches of them can be classified into some groups on the basis of named arteries.
6. So we should apply the statistic data of each named artery in the clinical evaluation of the cerebral arteries.
7. The size of caliber of each cerebral artery is measured in order of largeness of anterior, middle and posterior cerebral artery. There is no difference as to sex and between the right and the left side.
8. The angles between the anterior and middle cerebral artery, between the right. and left posterior cerebral artery and between the ipsilateral posterior cerebral artery and posterior communicating artery of all specimens are measured. The angles between the anterior and middle cerebral
artery in adult cases are twice as large as the ones in new born cases statistically. The degree of latter two angles are increased from increasing age respectively.
